Surfrider: Biggest sewage spill we've ever seen
This is the largest sewage spill we’ve ever seen. Yet, it took more than 3 weeks for San Diego residents to be aware that 143 million gallons of raw sewage polluted the beaches from Rosarito, MX to Coronado, CA.
This is an unacceptable risk to humans, wildlife and the environment!
Sadly, if the EPA and the BEACH Act are defunded, we may never have received warning at the beach that the water was contaminated and unsafe for swimming or surfing. Don’t let this become the new norm!
Surfrider does not want your health and the health of over 100 million people who visit U.S. beaches annually at risk. We all deserve to know whether a day at the beach will make us sick.
It makes our Blue Water Task Program – a volunteer-led, citizen science water quality testing program – even more important that needs to expand. Right now, our coastal defenders are collecting samples from beaches that are not covered by city or state monitoring programs, or during times when no one else is testing.
If we meet our goal of $100K by March 31, Surfrider could set up 10 new Blue Water Task Force labs in critical coastal areas and provide resources to our clean water programs.
That means, if 400 people respond today with a gift of $25, one lab can be launched!
Will you be one of the 400 people we can count on?
