Spyder Surf Fest presented by Rockstar Energy Drink

Fifth Annual Event to Take Place on Saturday, April 7, 2012 in Hermosa Beach

 

March 30, 2012 (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) – Spyder Surfboards is proud to host the Fifth Annual Spyder Surf Fest presented by Rockstar Energy Drink on Saturday, April 7 on the Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza. Following the success of the last four years, Spyder Surfboards has again joined forces with the City of Hermosa Beach and the Southern California Surf Industry for another exciting Legends of Surf Weekend.

 

We can’t believe we’re in year five of the Surf Fest already. It’s been so much fun for everybody and we’ve had such a great turnout every year,” said Dennis Jarvis, Spyder Surf Founder. “I love seeing all the groms running around with bags full of the free swag they’ve collected and huge smiles on their faces. I expect this year to be the best yet!”

 

The Legends of Surf Weekend kicks off on Thursday night, April 5, as B4BC (Boarding for Breast Cancer) hosts the Surf Fest Kick-Off Bash at Watermans from 9 p.m.-Midnight. One dollar for every B4BC Signature pink drink will go back to support B4BC’s year-round educational programs.

 

Friday night, April 6, the Hermosa Beach Community Playhouse will be packed with surfers as the South Bay Boardriders Club present the “South Bay Big Wave Challenge Award,” honoring both the surfer who caught the biggest wave of the winter in Los Angeles County waters as well as the photographer who captured the image. Both before and after the presentation, there will be food, drinks, movies, live music and a silent auction to benefit the Hermosa Beach Historical Surfing Museum.

 

Saturday morning at 8 a.m. on the Southside of the Hermosa Beach Pier, the best Alumni Surfers from Mira Costa and Redondo Union High Schools will square off in the ultimate team format surf contest for bragging rights and the honor to present their school’s surf team with a $1,000 check.

 

At 11 a.m., the City of Hermosa Beach will host the induction of the two newest members to The Surfers Walk of Fame – Mark Levy and Steve Wilkings. Mark Levy has a long list of high finishes and surfing championships throughout the 1970s including the US Junior Men’s Championships at Cape Hatteras. He was also named “Best Californian Surfer” by Surfer Magazine in 1974. Steve Wilkings was raised in Hermosa where he began capturing memorable images of top surfers, helping to chronicle a golden age of the sport in the 1960s. Wilkings served as a senior staff photographer for Surfer magazine for a decade, and his images have appeared in Time, Life, People, Playboy, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone and Surfers Journal, and has also been in numerous books. Levy and Wilkings join Surfing Pioneers and South Bay greats previously inducted including; Greg Noll, Bing Copeland, Hap Jacobs, Donald Takayama, Dewey Weber, Leroy Grannis, Dale Velzy and more; as their bronze plaques are set into the Hermosa Beach Pier

 

At 12:30 p.m. sharp, Spyder Surf Fest 5 will kick off featuring six live bands on the main stage at the base of the Hermosa Beach Pier – local youth sensations West Swell will lead off, followed by Kevin Sousa, Echo Division, Too Rude, Hoist the Colors, and Surf Walk of Fame inductee Mark Levy’s Band the Bixby Dicks. Also appearing on the main stage between the bands will be the ever-popular Spyder Girls fashion show, showcasing the latest in girl’s fashion.

 

From the stage east to Hermosa Ave., the pier plaza will be packed with promotional teams and industry leaders from the biggest and best surf brands, including Hurley, Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, Electric, Rip Curl, Roxy, Sanuk and many, many more. There will be free giveaways, fun games, stars of the surfing world and great vibes for all.
