Drum roll: New Whole Foods opens today

Here’s my advice: Go there, it’s awesome!

I got two sneak peaks of the new 60,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market at The District in Tustin before it opened. The place is amazing. It’s a shrine to food, and will appeal to gourmet cooks and to the health conscious.

I’m a sucker for Whole Foods, I must admit. I love how they do all the editing for you. The sell nothing with artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners and hydrogenated fats.

Lots of health food stores do the same, but what elevates Whole Foods in my mind is the high-quality, fresh products they carry that serious foodies can love. And I’m not even a foodie!

Will I shop there all the time? Doubt it, because it’s pretty expensive. You know the “Whole paycheck” joke I’m sure. But in the new store, they have more space for the company’s “value” 365 line, which is pretty reasonable. There’s everything from 365 shampoo to 365 olive oil. I can see making the trek a couple of times a month to stock up on good stuff.

The new store is also a great place to grab some takeout or even sit, sip wine and hang out.

Here are some highlights: gelato and pudding bar, tapas bar, tea bar, a vegetable grilling station, pasta bar, taqueria with fresh baked tortillas, smoked meats and seafood, several hot food bars and pizzas, sushi and noodle bowls made to order. You can order a glass of wine or draft beer to drink with your food. Oh, and they have free WiFi.

Seriously, I’m not even doing it justice. Go see for yourself. It’s worth the drive, I promise. Only big down side: It’s in The District, which is poorly designed and hard to navigate.
