WSJ story worth reading about impact of huge discounts at Saks

By TIFFANY MONTGOMERY
February 09, 2009 08:01 AM

The Wall Street Journal has a front page story today that examines the ramifications of Saks Fifth Avenue's decision to cut prices 70 percent on designer goods before Thanksgiving.

It touches on many of the issues being discussed in the action sports industry - discounting, the survival of independent retailers, brand-owned stores, broadening distribution of goods and product segmentation.

The story is behind WSJ's paid wall but see a summary here. Legally, I can't run the whole story because it is copyrighted.
