Nordstrom records tough April and quarter

By TIFFANY MONTGOMERY
May 08, 2008 06:50 AM

While many retailers reported positive same-store sales in April, Nordstrom recorded a 3.8 percent same-store sales decline.

For the first quarter, same-store sales fell 6.5 percent, below the 3 to 5 percent decline the company expected.

Strong categories during April: Cosmetics, designer product across all categories and women's activewear, hosiery and intimates.

Strong regions: South and Midwest

Other news: Nordstrom is moving up its half-yearly sale for women and children two weeks early. The sale will now start May 21. The company said it wants to better align the sale with Memorial Day weekend.
