Shop-eat-surf.com weekend edition

Here are some items that arrived in my inbox I wanted to share. One involves Dave Hollander taking action to reduce noise pollution from sky advertisers. The other involves the upcoming Surf for Awareness contest Aug. 9 organized by Una Baker.

Dave Hollander helps chase away sky advertisers

Avid beach volleyball player Dave Hollander was tired of noisy sky advertisers flying over Hermosa Beach every weekend.


So Dave, the co-owner of Becker Surfboards, took matters into his own hands by running an advertisement in the Easy Reader, a well-read South Bay publication. The advertisement blasted sky advertisers and named the companies that used them during a particularly noisy weekend in Hermosa Beach.


It created a uproar in the city, and the City Council took up the issue.

Accord reached on aerial banners over the beach

Aerial advertising companies have agreed to limit how low their airplanes may fly when they tow ad banners over the beach, and how often they may fly over special summer events.

Six companies - the only ones holding federal permits allowing them to tow the banners above Hermosa - have signed a voluntary agreement to fly at least as high as the minimum altitudes established by federal regulations, and in some cases higher.

In addition, the companies agreed to limit themselves to four planes circling a special event, advertising for no more than 15 minutes before taking 10 minutes off.

Company officials took seriously an August 2007 newspaper advertisement in which Hermosan Dave Hollander, a partner in the Becker surfboard company, urged readers to "boycott sky advertisers."

Surf for Awareness contest is Aug. 9

Surf For Awareness contestThe surf contest started by Una Baker and designed to promote breast cancer awareness moves into its second year at San Onofre State Beach, Trail One. Proceeds from the event benefit Boarding For Breast Cancer, a youth-focused breast cancer awareness foundation.


The event features 19 divisions from elementary to adult for men, women and children. There is also a breast cancer survivor heat.


Registration is $55 and participants are encouraged to raise $50 or more to benefit the Boarding For Breast Cancer Foundation.
